Somebody told you that you can make a lot of money blogging, so you decided to start your own blog?
It’s true that you can quit your job and pay your bills exclusively with the income from your blog and even become rich.
But the untold reality is that making a lot of money blogging can be:
- And can be very frustrating…
Blogging is an A – Z thing, so it will require that you learn many skills that are not difficult to master, but it will take some time.
Below, I’ll give you the best blogging tips and tricks for beginners (and even for some experts):
1. Use a self-hosted Platform
This is a super basic and obvious blogging tip, but you need a self-hosted website to be successful and earn money. I still see some people starting a blog on a free platform and this is one stupid mistake that you must avoid.
What is a self-hosted blog? And why you need it?
You can start a blog for free using a platform like Blogger, Wix, Squarespace, but this is a big mistake. But for countless reasons is not recommended for a professional blog.
First, because your domain name will be something like “myblog.wix.com” (which sounds horrible), second because of the lack of customizations, and for many other reasons that will not help you.
How to start a self-hosted blog?
First, you need to choose a domain name. A domain name is basically the name of your blog/site and it’s by your domain name that people will find your site.
After that you choose your domain name you need to pay for hosting – it’s very cheap so don’t worry.
If you still haven’t started your blog, I recommend BlueHost – it’s only $50 per year and you have reliable and fast hosting. If you don’t know how to configure your blog, you can check this article about how to start your blog.
2. Get Organized or you’ll Fail
Did you hear somewhere from a guru that you can make a lot of money blogging only 4 hours per week??
Sorry to disappoint you, but you’ll never earn money blogging only 30 minutes per day on weekends or on your free time… Some big blogs that already have tons of traffic from Google and search engines can “work on auto-pilot” and their owner can maintain their blog making money with just a few hours per week.
But until you reach this point you’ll have to learn some skills:
- Writing great content
- Email marketing
- Graphic design
- Content and sales marketing
- Social Media
- And a few others.
So can you see why you need to have a lot of free time (at least initially)?
Now you can see why you need to be organized.
In the beginning, until you get some traction you’ll need to work at least 20-40 hours per week if you dream about making 4 or 5 figures per month.
Do you have a full-time job or have kids to take care? It will no be easy to blog, but you’ll need to be very organized and find time to blog.
Below are some blogging tips for beginners to find time to start blogging and making money:
- Reserve some time every day to blog, no matter if it is 2 hours or only 30 minutes, try to make it a habit.
- Focus on things that matter, designing a beautiful logo or finding the “perfect” WordPress theme will not make you rich.
- Avoid procrastination at all costs, from my own experience is very easy to get 20 minutes distracted watching a funny YouTube video instead of doing a boring task on your blog.
You need to create a to-do list that will have 1 or 2 important tasks for your day that will have a big impact on your blog.
Is creating a new blog post? Getting more visitors to your blog or writing a new email to promote your product?
Add that important task to your to-do list and FORGET everything else.
Or you’ll waste months and months working on your blog for nothing.
3. Be Persistent and never Give Up
When I started blogging I read tons of article with “top blogging tips”, but none of them will talk about the cold truth…
Make money blogging is totally different than working as an employee…
When you are an employee you’ll be trading hours for cash. But with blogging is different, you’ll earn money only when you make a sale or when you perform an action that will result in getting paid for it.
Unfortunately to grow a blog takes time… I started making some significant money only after 12 long months of blogging.
And why it takes so long to grow a blog?
The main reasons are competition and “you don’t know what you don’t know“. One of the most important parts of a blog is getting a lot of traffic (visitors to your blog). And there are tons of blogs out there, many of them launched many years ago.
So when you launch a blog you’ll be competing with at least hundreds and even thousands of other blogs.
All of them fighting for your attention on Search Engines and Social Media sites.
That’s why growing a site is a task that takes time.
So if you don’t see the results that you imagined after 6 or even 12 months, don’t give up!
Check if you are not making any big mistakes and keep working that sooner or later, the results will come.
4. Master one or two traffic sources
Getting traffic (visitors to your website) is one of the most difficult but extremely important factors for a successful blog. You are competing with many old sites ranking in the top spots of search engines. But getting thousands of visitors to your blog still is possible if you follow the right strategies as I’ll explain below.
The good news is that you can find many places to promote your blog and articles:
- Many other places.
First I need to tell you the “secret” about getting tons of traffic to your blog. Basically, you only need focused work.
Above I mentioned a bunch of places where you can promote your blog. However, I would never recommend that you try to be on every platform.
Instead, you only need to be 100% focused on only one or two big platforms. And it will be more than enough to get the traffic you need to get readers and sales.
What are the best places to get traffic yo your blog?
The best traffic sources will depend based on your niche – what you blog about.
But for 90% of bloggers with no doubts Search Engines (Google, Bing) and Pinterest are the best.
And why not Facebook or Twitter?
Because of the behavior of people using these platforms.
Everybody uses Facebook, even your grandma. But here is the point, people go on Facebook and other social networking to spy other people’s life, watch funny movies, share content that is not important for their friends and have fun.
It’s VERY difficult to get people of these platforms.
People don’t go on Facebook or Twitter to read articles or blogs (at least the majority).
Here’s why Google and Pinterest are the best:
Google is a search engine and Pinterest while it has some social elements it is also a search engine.
At both sites, people are using these sites to look for information. Users also go on Youtube to search for information, but it’s very hard to make people click on your website link because of the layout YouTube uses and the behavior of people.
On Pinterest people are actively looking for new ideas, recipes, “how-to” articles, etc. At Pinterest, people basically can only make a search typing the keywords and click on Pins with an URL.
Almost the same thing happens to Google.
Ranking on the first page of Google is hard
Unfortunately, to get traffic from Google you need to rank on the first page. And those spots are taken from big or old websites. But there are still plenty of keywords that are not so difficult to rank and drive traffic to your website.
You’ll find tons of blogging tips (from other sites) saying that you must master SEO (search engine) if you want to get traffic. Although Google is the biggest source of traffic for many blogs, my advice is that in the beginning, you focus on another platform that is much more easier to rank – Pinterest.
So for the first 6 months, don’t worry if you are not getting tons of traffic from Google.
Why I recommend Pinterest
For many people, Pinterest is social networking. But if you know how this platform works, you’ll notice that it has some elements of a social networking site (followers), but it’s mainly a visual search engine.
Try to imagine a mix of Instagram with Google.
There’s a big search box where you can look for information and Pinterest will display Pins where you can click and you’ll be redirected to a website with the information you were looking for.
Similar to Google, it will take time to build traffic, but you’ll not need to wait for ages to see some results if you use my secret weapon:
Tailwind has a feature called “Tribes” which I consider my “killer weapon” to drive traffic to my website…
First of all, what is Tailwind?
Tailwind is a very useful and essential tool designed for Pinterest that has many features. With Tailwind you can:
- Check the most popular pins.
- How many reshares you are getting.
- See your followers growth.
- How many traffic you are getting from Pinterest.
- Get tons of shares with Tribes.
Tailwind Tribes – The Magical Weapon to get Traffic
The best thing about Tailwind is not those accountability features that I described above… But Tribes are the best one.
What are the Tribes?
Tribes are groups or communities inside Tailwind. You can join these groups and add your Pins to get shared there.
It works in a simple way: you need to share 1 pin from other members to get your pin shared (1:1 ratio).
Your success with Tribes will depend on your Pins quality, your niche, the engagement of the Tribes you join, etc…
For me, it’s working very well as you can see in the image below.
These results are only possible because I’m a member of 90 groups. And it requires several hours per day to manage all these Tribes (sharing my contents and from other members).
I pay $60 per month on my plan, because of the upgrade required to have unlimited submissions to Tribes. It’s a bit expensive if you are a beginner, but it’s worth every cent.
If your blog is new, I really recommend that you join TailWind and upgrade to get more Tribes submissions.
5. Write Useful Content Frequently
If you heard that “content is king”? Driving traffic to your blog and writing high-quality content is one of the most important factors for success.
Why you need to write useful and high-quality content?
For 2 simple reasons:
- Because if your content is of low quality, people will leave your blog and search for the information they were looking for on your competitors. With no readers, there’s no email subscribers, no sales and no money.
- High-quality content is a must if you want to get traffic from Google and social media sites. A short article of 200 words will never drive tons of traffic because it’s not deep enough to answer the doubts and problems your readers ware looking for.
But it also makes no sense to spend 2 weeks writing a top 5000 words article if you don’t promote it the right way.
I recommend that initially, you write an article that are 1000 to 2000 words long and improves it at the moment you start getting more traffic.
Also, blog titles must be Eye-Catching to attract people yo read your blog posts.
Build your email list
This is also one of the most important blogging tips. If you dream to make a lot of money, building your email list should be one of your most important tasks.
How to build your email list?
First of all, you need an email marketing provider. The best one is Aweber because it’s simple and easy to use, even if you are a beginner.
If you join Aweber, the first month it’s free, then it will cost only $19 per month.
Answering the question, the most effective way to start building your email list is by giving away for free something that your readers will find valuable.
For example, if you build a blog in the health/lose weight niche, you can give away a free PDF guide about the best exercises and food to lose weight. To get the free PDF guide, your visitors need to enter their email address.
It’s hard to get email subscribers if you just put a simple form saying “sign up to receive my newsletter”… Nowadays people don’t give their email address so easily.
To build a huge base of email subscribers you need to give for free something valuable. It can be a free guide, a free trial of a product or service, video tutorials, etc. Try to be creative.
Other reasons to build an email list
There are several reasons to build your email list. But getting the email address of your visitors is a great deal because you can contact them at any time you want.
An email list is great to build relationships with your readers, increase trust and guess what? Sell products to them.
Getting email subscribers is the most crucial step to make money with your blog. The more subscribers you get, the more money you’ll make.
6. Monetize your blog with Affiliate Programs
You started a blog to make money, right? This is the most interesting but the most difficult part. You can find tons of blogging tips about how to make money with a blog.
And many will say that you just need to get traffic and use a program like Google Adsense. So you just need to make your visitors click on these ugly ads and you’ll make money.
Seems an easy task, but it’s not.
Making money with the advertising model is very difficult, below are a few reasons why it’s a bad idea:
- You’ll get paid only $0.10 to $1 per click.
- You literally need tons of people visiting your site.
- Getting a huge amount of visitors is very difficult.
- The average CTR (click through ratio) is ridiculously low between 1% and 2%.
- Ads are an ugly thing.
Concluding, to earn a least $1500 per month with ads, you’ll need a minimum of 1,000 daily visitors and there are better ways to make money.
The affiliate model
This is the best way to make money. The affiliate model is when you promote someone’s else product and you get paid a commission from it. Usually, you’ll earn anywhere from 10% to 75% of the original price.
Alternatively, you can create your own programs and stay with 100% of the profits. But it will require a lot of hard work to create your own products. So I don’t recommend it for beginners.
Basically, this is how you’ll make money with the affiliate model:
You’ll use your email list to promote your affiliate offers (or maybe your own products). It’s only 5 simple steps if you see this graphic, but of course, there are countless tasks that you must master inside each of these steps.
But this is essentially the most profitable way to make money with your blog.
7. Set Realistic Goals
When I started this blog, my initial goal was to earn $100 per day after 6 months. But it took me over 2 years to achieve this goal.
High expectations = to higher frustrations.
So never put unrealistic goals like “I plan to make $10k per month after 3 months”
Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. Work hard and sooner or later you’ll reach your goals.
8. Avoid Website design mistakes
Content is king but the design of your site is the queen.
Would you read a 2500 words article with a small font? Or read a site with a black background and white font color?
Another big mistake is adding several sidebar and widgets to your site.
The point of having dozens of widget or links at the sidebar can confuse your readers and even hurt your rankings on Google and make your readers abandon your site quickly.
I wrote a detailed article showing how to avoid these design mistakes.
9. Add these tools and plugins to your blog
There are many tools and WordPress plugins that you can’t live without. However, instead of writing about them here, I’ll recommend that you read this article with the best WordPress plugins and this one with the best tools and resources for your blog.
There are many other blogging tips for beginners that I could write here, but from my 5 years on this adventure, I’m sure that if you are a beginner, these blogging tips will make a huge difference to reach success and earn money.
